My "Why"

My "Why" is personal.  I saw my parents argue about money frequently growing up.  There was rarely enough of it and was only made worse after my father lost his job of 27 years following an acquisition of the company he worked for, losing much of his pension and all of his healthcare benefits in retirement.  In his mid 50's at the time, he struggled to find his footing and my mom stayed home for the most part raising 5 kids.  Throw in the pressure to "keep up with the Joneses" and the real cost of raising 5 kids, and filing bankruptcy wasn't far behind.  Obviously not something my parents were proud, the bankruptcy filing happened under the radar, not discussed with us kids until it was too late to help.

From then on it was a struggle as dad jumped from job to job trying to make ends meet and provide for their retirement until he was in his late 60's when cancer came knocking on the door.  He passed away at the age of 70 with little left over for mom, who started showing symptoms of alzheimers about that time and 10 years later succumbed to that disease in a Medicaid-eligible nursing home.  They were great parents and likely not that unusual at the time.  Counting on a pension to take care of them in retirement, they didn't have much saved outside of the pension and spent most of their income on their family.  Any life insurance was cancelled to save money along the way and they certainly didn't have long-term care insurance.  All this added to a lifetime of financial struggles and as far as I remember, they never spoke to a financial coach or advisor along the way.

This last part encapsulates my Why.  While I can't help my parents, I can help others avoid a similar fate.  They never felt financially free, part of this perhaps due to their own lack of sound money management habits and the rest due to bad luck.  But that's life, right?  We can't predict what life is going to throw at us, we can only "hope for the best, and prepare for the worst".  We can spend less than we earn.  We can pay ourselves first starting early in life and never stopping.  We can avoid "getting over our skis" in debt, such that when (not if) life throws us a curve ball it doesn't throw us off course.  We can maintain adequate insurance to protect worst case sceanarios.  And so on.

So that's my mission....to help everyday people achieve the financial freedom they deserve, no matter how much money they make or how much they have in the bank.  To plan for things to go well, but be prepared for when they don't.
